Normally I would be a cheerleader for unity and communication. When meditating on Genesis 11, I realized there’s danger in good things, especially if disobedience is involved. After the flood, God’s command to Noah and his sons was to “be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth.” Staying in one spot to build a colossal monument wasn’t what God intended.
Add this kicker—man’s pride—and disaster will come. “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of the whole earth.” (11:3b)
You know the end of the story. The tower fell. People scattered. No longer did the world speak one language. Moral? Pride in ourselves and our accomplishments doesn’t please God. Rather our obedience ignites and fulfills His will in our lives.
Thank you for reading.
