Don’t you simply detest tepid? Lukewarm coffee doesn’t satisfy. It’s either hot or iced. Although God doesn’t need caffeine to get through his day, He feels the same way.
He thinks more like “Go big or go home!” No half-hearted effort on His part, and He invites us to join Him. Part of the Hebrew Shema found in Deuteronomy 6:5 sums up how He’d like us to behave: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.”
It’s simple but focused. God’s not about lukewarm. Neither am I. At home most always I eat my salad last because I want my meat and potatoes when they’re hot, not cooled off. So it should be with my desire for God.
God likes fire and fired-up followers. It’s no accident God appeared to Moses as a burning bush. Or that the Hebrews writer calls God “a consuming fire.” (12:29)
Jesus, the Son of God, echoes this when talking to the Laodicean church in Revelation 3:15-16: “I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.”
