Time for true confession: I like playing in the dirt. This time of year the ground is especially intriguing because I’m searching for signs of life—to confirm if what died in the late fall will reappear this spring. Don’t be too impressed because I am far from a gardening guru. However, I do love hanging out with Janet Mangas and Jan Ritter because they know their plants and all that horticulture stuff. In fact, the entire Johnson County Garden Club is a great group of folks who like to talk dirt.
On a higher level, spring reaffirms God’s ability to resurrect—to take what looks dead and give it new growth from the ground up. It’s no accident we celebrate Easter in the spring. Those of us blessed to live in four season climates are privileged to witness the dirt’s dramatic awakening.
If my front yard myrtle can green up each spring, then it’s not too much of a leap of faith to believe those of us created from dirt can experience the same transformation. “The Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life and man became a living being.” Genesis 2:7.
As we prepare to celebrate Easter, the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ, let’s not forget that the original garden was forever green, vibrant with full bloom, eternal in its glory. As Christ-followers, that again awaits. Keep digging!
