How does a red heifer relate to Jesus Christ? Glad you asked! Let’s start with water. It cleanses us, both inside and out. Doctors advocate drinking eight classes of water a day for good health. Water should be pure. If it’s contaminated, it can introduce harmful bacteria and parasites into our bodies. Not a good thing!
Pure water is much like holiness. In my NIV Bible, Numbers 19 contains the heading: The Water of Cleansing. Here the Lord told Moses and Aaron to have the Israelites fetch a red heifer without defect or blemish and never yoked. It would be slaughtered outside the camp with some of its blood sprinkled seven times in front of the Tent of Meeting.
Then the recipe thickens as the heifer is burnt and its ashes put in a ceremonially clean place outside the camp. Whoever then touches a dead body of anyone will be considered unclean unless he is sprinkled with water mixed with ashes from the red heifer. Metaphorically since our bodies are dying, we need to be made clean. Ashes from the red heifer added to water equals Old Testament cleansing. New Testament cleansing isn’t as complicated. Jesus Christ cleanses us from all sin, saves us from death and renews our purity. Praise God!
